Fun Facts: Key Terms Used In The New Federal Healthcare Reform Law May 8, 2010

This past spring, the President signed “The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (PPACA). Health care experts are now trying to sort out the details of the new law along with the complex implementation schedule.  Below are the frequency of some key terms used in the PPACA:

In the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the phrases:
• ” Accountable Care” is referenced 13 times
• “patient centered outcomes” is referenced one (1) time
• “value purchasing” is not referenced, but “value based purchasing” is referenced two (2) times

How about preexisting conditions, different diseases (e.g., diabetes, congestive heart failure), and specific organs.

The phrase “evidence based practices” is not used in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, the phrase “evidence based” is used three times. Here is one example:

“SEC. 2717. ENSURING THE QUALITY OF CARE.

“(a) QUALITY REPORTING.–

“(1) IN GENERAL.–Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Secretary, in consultation with experts in health care Quality and stakeholders, shall develop reporting requirements for use by a group health plan, and a health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage, with respect to plan or coverage benefits and health care provider reimbursement structures that–……….

(C) implement activities to improve patient and reduce medical errors through the appropriate use of best clinical practices, evidence based medicine, and health information technology under the plan or coverage……
